New Cohort of Teacher Leaders Step Forward

Twenty-seven staff members will take part in this year’s cohort of Leaders of Professional Learning. The teacher leaders will positively impact their schools by leading yearlong Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), or collaborative groups of teachers working toward school improvement goals.

Last year, for example, Ducketts Lane Elementary School 5th Grade Instructional Team Leader Justine Sillers focused on increasing Hispanic family involvement in schoolwide activities to increase student achievement. Rebecca Vandenberge and Rona Koppang, at the 3rd-grade level at Dayton Oaks Elementary School, examined goal setting and student-led conferences.

In total, as of last year, 371 staff members have participated in PLCs at 21 schools, directly impacting 6,611 students through this program, organized by the HCPSS Office of Teacher and Paraprofessional Development and Support in Human Resources and Development.
