Moving Forward With Equity Efforts
In August, the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), a broad-based stakeholder committee, released a comprehensive plan to promote positive behavior, respect for all cultures and diversity throughout the school system.
Here are a few examples of how the 52 CDI recommendations have been incorporated into ongoing continuous improvement efforts this school year.
Student Voice: Student Voice has been integrated into weekly high school advisory periods. Cultural Proficiency liaisons and other inclusion and equity specialists are assisting every school in setting Student Voice-related goals.
Curriculum: The school system is piloting partnerships between HCPSS schools and schools in other districts for cross-cultural exchanges. The service learning process is being revised for students to engage more in diverse cultural experiences. Community associations and Cultural Proficiency staff are actively partnering in curriculum resource enhancement.
Workforce Diversity: The HCPSS Office of Human Resources and Development is working collaboratively with university partners to build diverse applicant pools. Additionally, HR is offering training to HCPSS recruiters on equitable and consistent hiring practices, and engaging in internal recruiting practices to talent-spot and support aspiring administrative leaders and teachers.
Professional Learning: HR is implementing a long-term plan to provide Cultural Proficiency professional development to HCPSS staff. Every school has been assigned a diversity, inclusion and equity specialist to support school administrators.
