Celebrating a New School Year
As I begin my first full school year leading the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), I am committed to ensuring every child receives the support they need to reach their potential.
Each school year brings new opportunities to learn and grow, and this issue of Celebrate HCPSS focuses on continuous improvement. You will read about the progress our school system has made in closing the achievement gap and get a glimpse into our summer enrichment programs. As a former science teacher, I encourage you to read about how the Next Generation Science Standards improve science instruction for all students. We also have implemented higher standards for language proficiency of our English for Speakers of Other Languages students.
Most importantly, I want to continue improving communication with you. I welcome conversations through a variety of channels, including on Twitter at @MJMSuper.
It will take all of us working together to sustain and improve upon the excellence of Howard County public schools. I look forward to working with our Board of Education to take the system further this school year.
Best wishes for another year to celebrate.
Michael J. Martirano, Ed.D.
Acting Superintendent of Schools
